MANY A TIME ONE CANNOT GET THEIR LANDLORD TO REPAIR REQUIRED BROKEN FIXTURES. Many a time gas leaks are happening in the laundrey, stove or range sections, water heaters and although no one will notice the Landlord hasn't checked this on a regular basis. This is usally a quality attributed to Slum Lords those notorious theives and robbers that deprive a renter their rights, dignity, respect, safety, health, and well being besides their monies. They put a certain curtain over you making you think that if you ask things to be taken care of they can evict you. And evict you they may as retaliation for asking. They keep you terrorized, in fear, frustrated, angry, and maybe broke.
They hold a tyrants flag over your head and tell you many ways you either do it our way or no way or we'll make your life miserable.
So if you have to put up with faulty electrical wiring, broken elevators, gates, lack of latches on doors and gate systems, broken lighting or lack of bulbs in hallways and pathways, poisonous plants growing by your feet, lack of padding on the 2nd and 3rd story whereas you can hear every step your neighbor makes at night while you try to sleep, windows that do not shut all the way or are broken, broken stoves, fridges that need replacing, garbage disposals that sound like a war truck en route, pipes that are out of date and keep breaking down especially the lines that go right into the streets while you get blamed for causing the problem, and other hideous circumstances call your Housing Dept official or Housing Authority official now! Have him come over and write down and note everything wrong inside and outside your unit. Tell your neighbors too to let him/her in and write it down! Call the Health dept as well and make sure they come by your place. They are responsible over taking reports of all sorts of things from bugs and roaches to mold and mildew. Much of the Mold and Mildew is not your fault but from bad pipe systems that leak water underside the paint and from lack of ventilation. Many Landlord do not have windows or ventilation systems inside their bathrooms required by law but most renters know nothing about that law! Look it up for your area.
If there is an asbestos problem call the authorities and make a report. Screens need to be put on all windows required by law before you move in. If this is a problem for your landlord then call the City. Make a report.
If you do not have a manager in a building who takes care of all those problems call the local fire dept and Housing Authority. All buildings of a certain size require official and licensed management. No they cannot hire an illegal immigrant who does not speak English, has no legal experience handling the high standards of American building laws, who is paid two dollars a month to be your manager. Usually a manager studied management in school and knows the laws or rules upholding the American way of living. That is "SLUMS" are not allowed by laws!
No "Slum" is allowed to exist although the law breakers want to uphold some sort of barbarian constitution avoiding those laws.
If a Landlord doesn't fix the problem you have within a reasonable amount of time you have a right to withold all or some of the rent and fix it yourself. If you cannot fix it yourself or it is too expensive for your budget you have a right to withold rent and sue on breach of lease or inhabitability issues. All judges need to uphold your habitability rights. If they do not they are subject to being thrown off the bench or violating the laws themselves.
In America you have a right to be safe and live in healthy circumstances. I don't know where anyone else is from but oust all Slum Lords now. Sign this online petition and let's move ahead and stop allowing America to live like a 3rd world country.
