I live in Columbus and recently moved after living in an apartment for nine years. My former landlord sent me a letter saying I wouldn't get my deposit back because she needs to replace the carpet due to damage caused by my cat (stains). Per my lease, I paid to have the apartment professionally cleaned when I left. I understand that Ohio law says I am responsible for anything beyond "normal wear and tear", but am I responsible for replacing the entire carpet after nine years of use, no matter how they claim the carpet was damaged? I would think the landlord would be required to replace the carpet in the apartment anyway after a certain amount of time. Besides, the carpet was not new when we moved in nine years ago. What are the laws in Ohio regarding the lifespan of a carpet in an apartment? Am I on the hook for the total replacement cost of carpet that my wife and I used for nine years? If not, what legal remedies are available to me, and if necessary, what court will this case end up in? They want $1200 for the carpet in a 730 SF apartment.
