About 3 months (2 years ago) into my lease, I lost my job and was unable to afford my rent, although I tried. The next month, I received a Notice to leave the Premises and I immediately complied. I was fortunate enough to find friends to move in with.

I just received a notice of a complaint filed with the courts seeking rent for the remaining 4 months, plus cleaning/repairs.

I am willing to pay for the cleaning/repairs, plus the rent for the 4th month I lived there (minus the security deposit they kept), but I cannot afford to pay $5000 for the rent for the months I did not live there. Can I be made to pay that rent even though they terminated the lease and I moved out as they requested?

Sure, the landlord can come after you for "damages", and the loss of rent during your lease (a legal contract) is one of his damages. That's what a lease is for. FYI - you were the one who broke the lease when you did not pay the rent as per the terms detailed in your lease.
Other questions;
- When was the house/apartment was rented after you moved out? If it was rented sometime before your lease expired to a new tenant, you would be released from your lease at that point. The Landlord must mitigate damages and not charge you the amount of rent he collected from the new tenant.
- Did you get an itemized list of "damages" specifying what the deposit was being held for?

I have had many tenants move out early, while in a year's lease. Sometimes they find another house, sometimes they buy, sometimes money problems. I am surprised at how many think that once they're out, their obligation ends. A year's contract is an agreement of what each party will provide to the other for a year.
