*****Criminal statistics
Q - I am frustrated trying to get any fact from the apartment managers regarding crime in the area. They keep giving me various lies :- it's the law , its against corporate policy etc. even when I point out that there's no such law. Isn't there any law to force them to give me information. The local police takes a long time to give out any information. Isn't sensible for the apartment management to provide this information so that we can take enough precautions etc rather than give these false information and raise uncertainty and put-off potential renters altogether. BTW "water's edge apartment " in terms of crime ? its in the intersection of 33 & I70 in south-west. I am pretty new to Columbus. Dave 7/16/04
*****A - If you go to www.columbuspolice.org You can get a summary of crime reports in the area where you live by clicking on (offense reports). Thats what I do when i'm finding a new place to live and want to know about the crime. Gene 7/16/04
*****A- There is no law forcing the landlord to make disclosure of criminal activity around the apartments. The landlord's failure to give you a straight answer should be setting off the warning bells against your living there. There are a lot of other ways that they can be untrustworthy once they get you locked into a lease, so you may want to consider renting elsewhere. Just as there is no law forcing them to give you the information you want, there is no law forcing you to live there either if you haven't already signed a lease.
There is a company in Columbus called Rentfinders which can place you with a local landlord and the fee for doing so is charged to the landlord. If you explain to them that you want a low crime area, they will likely be able to find something acceptable for you. They work with a lot of landlords with places around Columbus. Their number in Columbus is (614)299-2333. Eric 7/16/04
