How to Replace a Toilet Wax Ring

Final Steps - Toilet Wax Ring Install

When you crank down on the two bolt nuts, rotate from one side to the other to get an even seal on the underside of the toilet. Make a couple quarter turns on the right and then repeat this process on the left and then back again until the toilet feels secure to the floor. Never over-tighten the nuts, this could cause the bowl to crack or break.

After you are satisfied with the sturdiness of the toilet, go ahead and hook up the supply line to the tank and turn on the water stop valve.

Before you make the test flush, place paper towels around the base of the toilet bowl keeping them away from the bowl about 1/8 ". If they touch the side of the bowl they could absorb condensation from the cold water in the bowl, giving you a false reading. Now, go ahead and give the toilet a flush!

Once you've established that there are no leaks anywhere, You can break off the ends of the bolts. You do this so the covers will fit over them, the breakaway types are much simpler than cutting them with a hacksaw.

Place your finish cap over the base bolt and you are off to the next project! ***NOTE- I've seen some toilets where the owners or installers have caulked around the base of the toilet. This is for cosmetic reasons only and if you do caulk around the base, be sure to leave a space un-caulked in the rear of the base to allow any leaks that may occur over time to be noticed. Leaks that get underneath the flooring have to go somewhere and usually cause serious damage along the way.
