How to Replace a Toilet Wax Ring
|
Flange Toilet Wax Ring preference
Some toilet wax rings have a drain flange while others are just a simple wax ring. I prefer the flange wax ring to help direct the waste down into the toilet drain. With the flange wax ring you also have a better chance for no leaking. The wax ring by itself is a great defense against leaking of waste materials, gases and odors, and water, but the flange really directs the flush down the toilet drain where it belongs!

Wax ring in place and ready to go
Once the wax ring is centered and the bolts are holding there own in an upright position, it's time to set the toilet in place.

Setting toilet in place
Obviously I couldn't carry the toilet and take the photo at the same time, so I'll briefly explain how I set the toilet bowl. With that bowl and tank drained of any excess water weight, I straddle the toilet and with both hands carefully lift it up with the the two holes positioned over the base bolts and set it down very slowly smashing the wax ring and creating a watertight seal under the toilet. Never twisting, I continue to push down until I feel the toilet touch the flooring. * note : make sure the toilet bowl is in line with the surrounding walls. Look at the bowl when straightening the toilet ( NOT THE TANK). Sometimes the tank can be slightly crooked. This can be adjusted later. |
Final Steps - Toilet Wax Ring Install
Put the washer down on the bolt first. This washer protects the ceramic finish and helps pull the toilet bowl down tight when you turn the nut. If you are putting new decorative bolt covers on be sure to place the bottom portion of the snap-together bolt cover on before the washer. We didn't use them here.
